Professional Wardrobe Essentials

Congratulations, you’ve landed your first job/summer internship. Now here comes the hard part, dressing the role! Building your wardrobe is like your career, it grows over time. I have created a list of essentials you should invest in when building your workplace wardrobe. You can never go wrong with investing in timeless, quality pieces.

The Complete Tailored Suit – To be Wall Street Chic, you need a complete business suit! A suit could be a 2-piece or 3-piece suit that could be a combination of skirt, pants, or dress with a matching suit jacket that is tailored to your size. Stick with a solid colors either black, dark grey (charcoal) or navy. Depending on your career, you shouldn’t worry about having 10 different suits. Build your collection over time, and maintain a two or three suit rotation. Your suit should be made of light wool material, so it is more versatile for the different seasons.

The Button-Down Shirt – The classic button-down shirt should be white or light blue that can be paired with your complete pant or skirt suit, slacks, or skirt. Your shirt should be fitted to your body type with a crisp collar. It’s best that the shirt be made out of quality material like cotton, so it can last for seasons to come.

The Pants – Dress pants are a staple piece that can be worn with almost anything in your wardrobe. The pair should be a classic, sleek pair of black trousers, preferably narrow legged, that are flattering and fit comfortably. Make sure to include a belt to complete your polished look.

The Skirt – Just like the pants, an easy alternative would be a skirt, either A-line or pencil shape. The skirt can paired with a simple cardigan, structured blazer, or detailed blouse.  Make sure to select a skirt that is length appropriate, usually knee length.

The Dress – The structured dress should frame your silhouette like sheaths or A-line dresses. Try to invest in a dress in a solid neutral tone like black, gray, navy, or beige. An appropriate choice dress can be transformed from work day attire to sophisticated evening wear in a minute.

The Pumps – Every professional woman has, or should have, a pair go-to pumps. Black pumps can be match with anything in your professional wardrobe. Invest in a comfortable solid black pair of closed toe pumps usually between the heights of 2-4 inches. Stay away from the 6in. heels, this is not a club!

The Blazer – If you want a piece that provides variety and adds an instant professional look, the blazer is that staple. Invest in a blazer usually black, gray, or navy that can be paired with dresses, skirts, pants, and the like. Hey, style it with a pair of jeans, it should fit that comfortably.

The Flats – Heels can hurt your feet after a long day of work. So get yourself a pair of black flats. They go with everything 95% of time (that percentage is not exact, but looks accurate)

Advice: Over the course of your internship, or the first six months of your career, invest in at least two essential pieces each pay check to build your wardrobe. Once you have your staple pieces, it will be easier to build your wardrobe. Be mindful it is about QUALITY, not QUANTITY!
